I am a professional videographer, a dad of two daughters, and I have a deep interest in youth understanding the media culture we find ourselves in today. Media is wonderful, I am not anti-media. Movies, TV, the web all add to our creative experience- but some media messages are harmful to us. We and our children must simply understand how media is carefully crafted- and for what reasons- and by whom. For 6 years I have made short media literacy videos with students (K to 12) in school settings. Our videos deconstruct Tobacco. alcohol, fast food and all other types of advertising and P/R. See our website www.memefilms.org for further information.
Media education is just beginning in Iceland and is not yet a part of the curriculum. For example, I am the first (and only) scholar in the field and I'm trying to put media education on the educational agenda in Iceland, e.g. by teaching the first media literacy courses at the Iceland Univeristy of Education. Some of my students may have begun to teach media literacy through production because that is is the basic approach in my teaching. As a matter of fact am doing a ph.d project on this theme: media production as a way of knowing. I plan to finish it...god knows when. :-)
